ABOUT US

Geoff Simpson and John Allinson established S&A in 1978. The company has been manufacturing steel framed buildings ever since, keeping up to date with the latest innovations.

Geoff & John firmly believe that as well as the excellent standard of our buildings, the success of the company is much attributed to the dedicated team of people who work here, day in day out. Our team deal with farmers, landowners, architects and business people, making sure that their every need is looked after and that the product is designed around the end users requirements.

Experience, understanding, imagination and technology have all been brought together by S&A in the design of the Roundhouse Building. Available from our wholly owned subsidiary, Roundhouse Building Solutions Ltd., this new concept brings advanced building design to the agricultural market, some of which has never been seen before.

Although mainly known for our work with the farming industry, we also design and produce a range of commercial and industrial buildings.

Did we build our own factory? Of course we did!

Our Partners:
We have companies we work with across Europe to offer solutions for almost every situation, so no matter what you need please ask. We have experience of structural fabrics and timber buildings, canopies and shelters. As a company we have spent over 40 years working on building a chain of trusted suppliers, so if you have a problem and no one else can help maybe you should call the S&A team!

OUR FACTORY

Based in Barnard Castle in our purpose built factory, covers 30,000sqft of factory floor (entirely designed and built in house) on a 2.5 acre site. Like all businesses we have expanded our premises as the business has grown and 2018 has seen further expansion. This year we have bought a Geka Alpha 500 CNC punching and shearing line for flat bars and a Ficep Excalibur 12 CNC beam drilling line, this joins with our existing Daito saw and numerous Kingsland machines to help us produce steelwork more accurately and efficiently.

Feeding these machines we have three 5t gantry cranes which run the length of the main factory moving material quickly and easily between work stations.

Finally at the end of the factory we have a section shot blaster which blasts all steelwork that is to be painted and feeds it directly into the paint shop for immediate painting, none of our steel work goes outside until it’s been painted.

On site we aim to run our own plant as much as possible but do inevitably end up hiring in machines as and when we need them. We currently have our own fleet of Merlo telehandlers and Haulotte cherry pickers.

FACTORY MODERNISATION

As 2019 drew to a close, it marked the end of a significant investment by S&A Fabrications in to our factory Barnard Castle. The company, which was purchased under a management buyout by Simon Pelly and Jonathan Kirk in October 2018, is already one of the largest manufactures of steel framed buildings in the UK and is growing from strength to strength. To keep up with growth and to allow for future expansion plans, S&A have had to build a new 384 square metre wing to our already substantial factory.

The purpose of the new building is to house a Ficep beam drilling line which drills holes in the massive columns and rafters used in their farm buildings and a Jaespa Concept PG band saw which cuts the huge steels to length. The new facility also houses a 5 tonne gantry crane and has an angled entrance to allow lorries to be unloaded undercover straight onto the machine beds, before the material passes into the main factory. This is a further development after a shear and punch line was installed and commissioned earlier in the year.

These new investments means that buildings can be manufactured on site, quicker and with more precise accuracy than ever before. and was part funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Regional Development.

Simon Pelly, Managing Director explains that the investments don’t just stop there “as well as the physical growth of the factory, we have also brought new technology in to the business with a new computer system and our own health and safety system for loading vehicles, something we had never done before. Savings made by the new systems and processes have allowed us to employ a further five new staff, here in Barnard Castle, to help us increase output and meet demand”
