Following our recent update on steel market volatility, further changes are now set to impact pricing across the UK from July 2026. These developments are driven by a combination of government policy and ongoing supply-demand imbalance.

The UK’s Ongoing Steel Shortfall

The UK continues to use significantly more steel than it produces domestically. On average:

UK production sits at around 5–6 million tonnes per year
Demand typically reaches 9–11 million tonnes per year

This gap means the UK relies heavily on imported steel to meet demand—often accounting for around half of total supply.

New Import Tariffs and Quotas

From 1 July 2026 , new government measures will tighten control over steel imports:

Import quotas (the volume allowed in without penalties) will be reduced
Any steel imported above these quotas will face a 50% tariff

These changes are designed to limit the volume of low-cost steel entering the UK market and to support domestic producers.

What This Means for Prices

Because the UK cannot meet its own steel demand:

Businesses will still need to import steel
However, those imports will now be more expensive and more restricted

At the same time:

UK producers will face less competition from cheaper overseas steel

If you’ve noticed steel prices creeping up recently, you’re not alone so we thought it was worth explaining what’s going on, in plain English.

There’s no panic here, but there are some real factors behind the scenes that are affecting costs across the UK. The biggest one? Energy.

Put simply, it costs more to make steel in the UK than it does in much of Europe, largely because electricity prices are higher. And because steel production uses a lot of energy, those costs inevitably feed through into the price of materials.

So, what’s actually causing the increase?

There isn’t just one reason, it’s a combination of things:

UK steel producers are paying significantly more for electricity than many European competitors, which makes production more expensive.

S&A Fabrications is pleased to announce the acquisition of Prism Planning, a well-established planning consultancy operating predominantly across the North East of England.

Founded in 2008, Prism Planning has built a strong reputation over nearly two decades for delivering high-quality planning advice, innovative problem-solving and strategic guidance to clients across commercial, industrial, agricultural and renewable energy sectors. While its core client base spans Yorkshire and the North East, Prism has also delivered specialist work nationwide, including renewable energy schemes and projects involving Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).

The acquisition forms part of the continued growth of the P&K Construction Holdings Group, which is active in the development of large-scale and prestigious commercial, industrial and agricultural projects. The project, delivered as principal contractor, marks another major milestone in the company’s growing portfolio of large-scale aviation infrastructure developments across the region.

Appointed as principal contractor, we’ll be delivering Hangar 362 — a state-of-the-art facility that will support Draken’s advanced combat aircraft operations, used in training and readiness exercises with the UK Ministry of Defence.

This exciting new project marks another major step forward for Teesside’s growing aviation and defence sector, and we’re delighted to be playing our part in providing the infrastructure that helps make it happen.

Our Managing Director Simon Pelly joined Simon Tate (MD, Draken UK), Phil Forster (MD, Teesside International Airport) and Ben Houchen (Mayor of Tees Valley) to officially break ground and mark the start of construction.

We’re proud to share that S&A Fabrications Ltd has received national recognition at the RIDBA Building Awards 2025 , winning the Livestock Building of the Year Award for our innovative work on the Kynren Aviary Project near Bishop Auckland.

The project saw our team adapt three of our signature Roundhouses—normally used for cattle housing—into a purpose-built home for birds of prey at Kynren’s world-renowned open-air live show site.

Each Roundhouse was reimagined to include divided sections, handling areas, and even ponds, allowing the Kynren team to care for the birds safely and efficiently.

The buildings were finished with painted exteriors and timber interiors, blending beautifully into the show’s dramatic landscape and adding a touch of theatrical flair.

The award was presented during a ceremony held beneath the wings of Concorde at the Concorde Conference Centre in Manchester, where Lynn and Simon Pelly proudly collected the trophy on behalf of everyone at S&A.

“We’re incredibly proud to bring this award back to Barnard Castle,” said the S&A team. “The Kynren project pushed us to think differently about what our Roundhouses can do, and it really showcases the versatility of rural buildings beyond their traditional uses. Most importantly, it’s a recognition of the hard work of our local team and the subcontractors who helped us deliver the project on time and on budget.”

We’re delighted to announce that two of our recent projects have been shortlisted for the RIDBA Building Awards 2025 —a national event that recognises the very best in rural and industrial buildings across the UK.

This year, we’re proud to see the spotlight fall on both the Kynren Aviary Project and the Brocksbushes Farm Shop Extension —two very different builds that reflect the versatility and creativity of our team at S&A Fabrications.

Kynren Aviary Project

This was a first for us—and for the Roundhouse. Working closely with the team at Kynren, we adapted three of our iconic Roundhouses to help house birds of prey for their live outdoor show near Bishop Auckland.

While the interiors were fitted by others, the structures themselves were customised with painted exteriors and sympathetic finishes, blending into the theatrical landscape while delivering practical, long-lasting shelter. It’s a unique use of the Roundhouse that has opened up exciting possibilities for future projects beyond agriculture.

Brocksbushes Farm Shop Extension

A little closer to home, we also delivered a spacious, high-quality extension for the popular Brocksbushes Farm Shop near Corbridge. Designed to improve both the flow and functionality of the space, the new extension offers customers a brighter, more comfortable shopping experience—without losing the charm of the original building.

Built with longevity and daily use in mind, this project demonstrates how structural steel can support rural retail in both form and function.

A Roundhouse Like No Other: Our Kynren Aviary Project

At S&A Fabrications, we’ve been building Roundhouses for years—mainly for livestock, feed storage, or agricultural machinery. But every now and then, a project comes along that takes us in a completely new direction. That’s exactly what happened when the team from Kynren approached us with an unusual brief: to create custom Roundhouses to house birds of prey for their upcoming live outdoor show.

A Home for the Stars of the Sky

Kynren, based near Bishop Auckland, is renowned for its spectacular open-air performances that bring British history to life on a grand scale. Their latest production includes a feathered cast—birds of prey trained to fly during the show. To keep these birds safe, comfortable and well looked after, they needed specially adapted housing—and that’s where we came in.

We supplied three Roundhouses and a selection of traditional shed-style structures to be used as aviaries. It was the first time our Roundhouses had been used to house birds rather than cattle—and it presented a fascinating challenge.

Adapting the Roundhouse

Although the internal layouts and fit-outs were handled by others, the buildings themselves had to suit the unique requirements of the project. Each Roundhouse was designed to accommodate multiple sections , making it easy to divide the space while retaining access from a central handling area.

One of the most effective features is this central pen, which allows for straightforward care and handling of the birds—a major plus for the team managing them day-to-day.

A New Look and Feel

Instead of our standard galvanised finish, the structures were painted, and the interiors were timber-clad by others to create a warmer, more immersive atmosphere. The result is something quite special—still unmistakably a Roundhouse, but with a completely different feel that fits perfectly within the theatrical world of Kynren.

Built with the Environment in Mind

Our Roundhouses are well-suited to open rural environments thanks to their practical design and robust build. They also include rainwater harvesting systems, which help reduce water consumption on site. Their low-profile roofs and sympathetic colour finishes help them blend discreetly into the landscape—ideal for projects where appearance matters just as much as function.

A Proud Collaboration

While we didn’t carry out the internal works, we’re proud to have played a part in such a creative and ambitious project. The feedback from the Kynren team—especially their Head Bird Keeper, who has years of experience including at London Zoo—has been overwhelmingly positive.

This project is a brilliant example of how agricultural design can be reimagined for something completely unexpected. Whether it’s livestock, machinery, or now falconry—our Roundhouses continue to prove just how adaptable they are.

S&A has commenced Construction of Hydrogen Refuelling Station at Teesside International Airport

S&A is proud to announce the commencement of construction on a state-of-the-art hydrogen refuelling station at Teesside International Airport. This pioneering project, led by Element 2, aims to provide hydrogen refuelling capabilities for a range of vehicles, including cars, trucks, vans, and airport support vehicles, as part of the UK Government-funded Tees Valley Hydrogen Transport Hub.

With planning permission now secured, the construction is scheduled for completion this spring. The facility will feature two refuelling bays offering both 350 and 700 bar pressures, a canopy, a single dispenser, and three storage tanks, all designed and built by French specialists Hydrogen Refuelling Solutions. This development is set to enhance commercial access to hydrogen and bolster the airport's green energy initiatives.

Simon Pelly, S&A Managing Director, stated: ""We are proud to be playing a key role in delivering this cutting-edge hydrogen refuelling station at Teesside International Airport. This project builds upon previous successful trials conducted at Teesside Airport. In 2021, the airport hosted a temporary hydrogen refuelling station and operated low-emission hydrogen-fuelled vehicles, including cars, trucks, forklifts, vans, and tugs, as part of the Tees Valley Hydrogen Transport Hub trial. The upcoming permanent station signifies a significant advancement in the region's commitment to sustainable energy solutions.

S&A Fabrications were thrilled to attend the opening of Airbourne Colour’s cutting-edge hangar at Teesside International Airport. The grand event was attended by over 200 guests, including key business leaders and regional stakeholders, celebrating this significant achievement for both the aviation industry and the local economy.

This project marks a special milestone for S&A Fabrications, as it is the company's first venture into hangar construction. The state-of-the-art facility was purpose-built to meet Airbourne Colours' growing demand for aircraft painting services, designed to accommodate various aircraft sizes, from small private jets to larger commercial airliners. The new hangar enhances Airbourne Colours' capacity to deliver high-quality finishing services, strengthening its position as a leading provider in the UK aviation sector.

The hangar’s completion is also a key part of the ongoing revitalisation of Teesside International Airport, which has seen significant investment in recent years. This new facility is expected to create up to 100 jobs in the region, supporting the growth of both the aviation industry and the local economy.

At S&A Fabrications, we have recently transitioned our factory workers to a 4-day working week, a strategic move that has led to remarkable improvements in both productivity and employee satisfaction.

Known for our high-quality metal fabrications, we decided to innovate our work schedule by extending daily hours from Monday through Thursday while reducing break times following a successful trial earlier in the year. This restructuring not only maintained the total number of working hours but also consolidated them into a more focused and efficient workweek.

As the Managing Director of S&A Fabrications, Simon Pelly explained the rationale behind the shift. “We wanted to enhance our work environment and explore ways to boost productivity without compromising our workers' well-being. The Role

You will work across the entirety of the sales process to find potential new customers, initiative and deliver direct contact to new business prospects, present our value proposition to them, uncover their commercial needs, ultimately convert them into clients, and continue to grow business in the future.

Draftsperson

The Role

Reporting directly to the Drawing Office Manager, the successful candidate will work within our drawing office detailing structural steel and cladding.

You will need to have experience of Tekla for this role and we will offer additional training if necessary and dependant upon the successful candidates skills.

Health of man and beast at the forefront of Roundhouse design

Generating profit from beef cattle relies on maximising growth rates and feed conversion, but neither will happen to the degree that is necessary, unless the environment for the animals is right from an early age, all the way through to the final finishing stages. Despite this, very few farm buildings provide the consistent level of ventilation that is necessary to ensure a sufficiently good airflow, to maximise health and contentment.

Open sided buildings can provide good airflow, but young calves need to be kept free of draughts, which can be defined as an airflow rate greater than 3mph. They should also have an environment free of dust, with low humidity, and ideally enough germs to give the calves immunity, but not too many for them to get infected with a disease.

The importance of being able to breathe well can be demonstrated by stating that people and animals can go without food for several weeks, and water for a few days. But try missing out on air. Then try to imagine being shut in a room with lots of other people for a sustained period of time. The room may be fine to begin with, but imagine what it would be like after 24 hours with no fresh air. Then imagine what it would be like for a week, or a month.

Good ventilation relies on the stacking effect – whereby air flows in through the sides and out through the top of a building’s peak. The problem is that few buildings are not affected by other factors which disrupt this airflow. These factors include other nearby buildings and doorways.

Geoff Simpson, who designed the Roundhouse back in 2001 in conjunction with partner John Allinson, did so with the environmental needs of cattle in mind, married to the best handling system to reduce stress and make managing the cattle as easy as possible.

The round shape and the carefully designed hole in the centre, ensures the stack ventilation effect always

works. It also keeps draughts to a minimum meaning cattle stay protected and warm. On a cold day, steam can be seen funneling out of the hole in the roof, proving that the air is flowing through the building and not forming pockets of stagnant air, where disease can form.

As well as improved airflow, the Roundhouse boasts, what Roundhouse MD Simon Pelly believes, is the best handling system available. “Working with cattle can be dangerous. An average of 49 people each year are killed in farming, with livestock related fatalities accounting for 8% of those. Safe cattle handling therefore needs to be at the forefront of any livestock farmers mind when deciding on their next building”.

How can your building help reduce energy costs?

We have all seen the effects of energy price increases over the last few years, no one more so than farmers and particularly when it comes to the costs associated with running grain dryers.

Nostell Estate in West Yorkshire were no different, so when it came to building their new grain store, S&A Fabrications were given the task of looking at how they could use the building to reduce costs.

Collaborating with Tornum Ltd, the new facility would boast a 30tph indoor drier, integrated with Skandia Elevator equipment and the Tornum AB Intelligent Drier Control (IDC) software. In addition, Tornum also supplied a low volume aeration system and the innovative Barn Owl ventilation application to ensure the optimal condition of the grain whilst in storage.

The building itself was designed by S&A and had a roof width of 25metres, creating a 1699 metre square area. At this point the solution became obvious. Teaming up with specialist solar installers, 418 solar photo voltaic panels were planned and put in place. By using the edge protection and netting already in place for the build team installing the roof, a smooth transition of work was enabled, saving costs on the installation.

The whole renewables package is completely unseen from the ground below and means that Nostell will be able to run their grain handling system, almost completely free of any energy costs, for many years to come.

With grants often available for such projects, there has never been a better time for introducing renewable energy solutions. S&A are now recommending any farmer looking at a new grainstore, or any building, no matter the size, to consider adding solar panels and to do it right at the start of the process, to allow for maximum cost savings.

Teesside Airport awards S&A contract for 'giant' new hangar

S&A Fabrications has been chosen to build a new hangar as part of a key expansion of Teesside International Airport.

From our Barnard Castle base we will now begin work on a giant hangar on the north side of the airport after securing the contract following a full procurement process.

The 30,000sq ft structure is the first of two new proposed facilities which will provide a development to attract further investment and return the airport to profit.

Work will start on site in coming months and is expected to take around six to eight months to complete.

The hangar will be 48.5 metres wide and 58.5 metres long and reach up to 15 metres at its highest point. When completed it will provide additional space for aircraft storage and maintenance. More than 230 tonnes of steel will be used in its construction.

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: “It fantastic to be delivering on this expansion of our airport which will not only provide work for a superb local company but also deliver on our aim of providing great new location for firms to grow.

“New hangar space at Teesside Airport is critical to landing new investment that’ll bring our airport back to profit and create good-quality jobs for local people. We’ve got the cash from Government to get this done and are now delivering new opportunities for our great businesses.”

The contract has already seen S&A Fabrications take on additional staff, with an expected increase in workforce of around five to 10 staff members. Around 30-40 subcontractors will support the company in delivering the facility on site.

It is the first aircraft hangar which S&A Fabrications will develop, building on our extensive experience delivering major structures for commercial and agricultural use.

The huge 600sq m doors will be provided by a UK company and the hanger will be large enough to fit planes such as a Boeing 737 MAX and Airbus A321neo.

Managing Director of S&A Fabrications Simon Pelly said: “We are delighted to have won this contract and it is a really big deal for us.

“It is not just another project for us and as a local company it means a huge amount to be delivering on this large-scale development.”

The progress follows recent significant investments from the private sector at Teesside Airport, including a £25m investment from Willis Aviation to create a new engineering base, which will create over 200 jobs in the region.

There has also been an expansion by defence contractor Draken and oil spill response firm 2Excel also now operate from Teesside Airport.

Work continues to progress on a 2km link road to the £200m airport Southside business park connecting the development to the A67 while local firm GMI is also delivering the first 25,000sq ft unit of the park. The Southside Business Park will ultimately create 4,400 jobs when fully operational.

Solar Powered Grain Store

Imagine being able to run your grain handling system, almost completely free of any energy costs. That’s exactly what this customer will be able to do, having just installed 418 solar panels to their new 25m wide grain store.

Teaming up once again with Teesdale Renewables , they have been able to install the panels using the edge protection and netting already in place for our team installing the roof, meaning a smooth transition of work and saving costs on the installation.

The building is the third one we have erected on this site, but the first to include the solar panels.

Arguably the fastest person on two wheels in our business, we’d all like to pass on our congratulations to Rob, who completed the ridiculously hard Fred Whitton challenge last week, with his friends from @teesdale_crc

Rob completed the 112 mile course, with 12000ft of climbing in an official time of 7hours 44minutes, which is an improvement of nearly 30minutes on his 2018 time, despite having had a child and no sleep in those 5 years!

What a well stacked Lorry

These beautifully stacked rafters are for a building with 9m eaves, 85m long and 50m wide, used for the storage of recycled plastic pellets at Middlesbrough port.

In total there is 18.392 tonnes of rafter on this one trailer, which is the first of ten scheduled to go to site.

Launching our Kit Buildings at LAMMA 2023

Fresh back from the 2023 LAMMA show, it was great to see everything back up to speed and running almost the same as pre-covid times.

The show was the busiest we can remember with, as usual, lots of interest in the Roundhouse.

The general buzz was one of a positive year to come and farmers continuing to invest in their businesses. We would agree with the positive outlook having ourselves material prices levelling off and, dare we say, turning, so long may it last.

We took the opportunity at the show to launch our new range of kit buildings, which are now on sale through our sister company, P&K Fabrications.

Solar on Farms makes sense in today's climate

S&A Fabrications are joining forces with local company Teesdale Renewables to offer clients solar panels for their new buildings. With energy prices rocketing installing a solar system as part of a new build makes financial sense if you can use the energy you produce.

S&A aren't solar specialists but we know about designing buildings and putting roofs on, Teesdale Renewables understand solar panels and electrics so it's a natural partnership. Working together we can model your new building and put panels on it creating a system that can then calculate the energy production and environmental benefits. It can even predict shade from nearby trees or buildings and show how this will impact the performance of the system.

If you can then provide your energy usage we can tailor the system to give you the optimum array size, and show where you'll have peaks and troughs. Allowing you to make an informed decision on payback and even if you'd require a battery to store energy created during the day.

Once we have the model built we can price up the system for you and then hopefully fit it as the same time as the roof and include the additional load into the building design.

Evolution of the Roundhouse

As the first Roundhouse agricultural building turns 20 years old this year, it has been interesting to see how the building has been embraced, not just by farming, but by the wider business community too. The benefits initially designed for animal welfare, are being recognised for other industries, particularly post Covid and the need for open air spaces, protected from the elements.

This year has seen Hampshire County Council build a Roundhouse 30 on their wartime farm as well as Hasty’s Adventure Farm and Matlock Farm Park utilising Roundhouses for their children’s play areas.

First opened as a farm museum in 1984, Manor Farm was the location for the historical documentary TV series ‘Wartime Farm’, broadcast by the BBC in 2012.

In 2019 Manor Farm became home to a Roundhouse livestock building. The Roundhouse gets its roots from The Bronze Age where it was used as the “family home” but today, Manor Farm’s 30 metre diameter building, made of galvanised steel and with a high tensile fabric roof, is the very latest in innovation. Visitors can climb the stairs to a bespoke gantry and look down on the animals that are held in eight separate pens.

This is the fourth viewing gantry we have installed and the feedback has been excellent for every one.

Both Matlock Farm Park and Hasty’s Adventure Farm have built Roundhouses to house their children’s play areas. Both businesses recognised the benefits of the free-flowing air and the sun and rain protection, meaning their play areas could have year-round usage. The appearance of the building itself is also something that is regularly commented on, especially by the children who have likened it to a UFO.

In Lincolnshire, a Roundhouse that houses deer, has recently been used for a craft and artisan market with over 50 stalls in and around the building. The first market was a roaring success with lots of public commenting on what a great space the roundhouse is and plans are afoot for more markets throughout the year.

It’s not just in the UK that Roundhouses are doing well. With the Roundhouse blueplan the businesses Dutch Partners have built two timber Roundhouses in Holland and are about to erect the first 45 metre Roundhouse in timber. In England there is a timber Roundhouse with planning approval in Essex and one already in use in Somerset.

Twenty years in and continuing to evolve and find new purposes, the Roundhouse truly has made its mark as a revolutionary building.

After the disruption and confusion surrounding 2020, we were hoping 2021 would settle down. With increases in steel prices, the continuing saga of Covid and delays on raw materials, it proved not to be the case. However, we have battled on and never once let our standards slip and it is therefore very nice to be recognised for our hard work by our peers, receiving not one, but three prestigious awards.

The Rural and Industrial Design and Building Association (RIDBA) is the leading trade association for modern agricultural and industrial buildings in the UK.

Every other year, RIDBA holds an awards ceremony to recognise excellence in the industry, recognising the very best in rural and industrial buildings and providing an excellent platform for RIDBA members to showcase their best projects.

This year S&A Fabrications entered four projects to the awards and were shortlisted for all four of them. At the awards ceremony in Manchester, S&A won two of the prestigious awards, including one for our work building the new shop extension at Mainsgill Farm on the A66.

The other project was a livestock building in Lincolnshire which won Livestock Building of the year for its effective use of space and internal design.

Simon Pelly, who has worked for S&A for 15 years and bought the company along with his business partner Jonathan Kirk in 2018, said “the RIDBA awards are the yardstick in the industry for recognising and rewarding excellence. I’m delighted to have our projects recognised again and it is testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff here in Barnard Castle and the build teams across the UK put in”.

“Our livestock buildings have been recognised for many years, but the project at Mainsgill Farm shows just how versatile steel framed buildings can be and how good they can look with the right finishes and a keen eye to detail.”

In another awards ceremony, we were announced as the Manufacturer of the Year (under £25m) winners at the Insider Made in North East Awards.

The Made in North East Awards celebrate the best and most innovative manufacturers in the region and S&A, who design, manufacturer and erect steel framed buildings throughout the UK from our base in Barnard Castle, took the award as the judges were impressed by us constantly looking to innovate and improve our products, as well as our commitment to never cut corners in order to save costs.

Simon Pelly, said it was a great honour to accept the award “we work hard at S&A and at times we are really under pressure, especially in the last twelve months, having to find new working practices to deal with the pandemic. It’s therefore hugely satisfying to win an award like this that recognises not only our passion for our industry, but also for the North East where we’ve been based since we were formed, back in 1978. We’re very proud of our staff in all departments, who continue to push the business forward and ultimately helped us win this award”

In 2020 we invested heavily in new software, processes and a 384sqm extension to our factory, to house new machinery. We currently employ over 40 people in Barnard Castle, where we manufacture all of our steel framed buildings, which are then distributed and erected around the country.

The devastating impact of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the effect of war on its citizens is unimaginable. At a time of crisis, however, it’s heartening to see so many nations coming forward to provide aid and support.

Sadly, the impact to the European and UK steel industry, as a result of the dreadful events taking place, will inevitably be price increases across all products we sell.

The consequences of energy supplies being disrupted, the availability of raw materials, and the disruption to freight and distribution channels, means that many of the mills are now ‘off-market’. As a result, they are now declining any new business until they have a clearer idea of how all these factors will affect their selling price.

Although we cannot provide any definitive answers at the moment, we will do our best to keep you updated as more information becomes available over the coming days and weeks.
